How StorySprout handles information

Adult-managed pilot only.StorySprout is child-focused, but its parental notice, verifiable parental-consent process, privacy contact channel, school agreements, and legal review are not complete. Do not offer this pilot for unsupervised child registration or district use.

Local reading profile

Sprout choices, book position, responses, accessibility settings, practice estimates, hard-word history, and optional clinician-entered notes are stored in this browser. The adult date of birth is checked locally and is not saved.

FIREBASE CLOUD

Adult account and synchronized progress

StorySprout stores the adult account name, email, sign-in provider, adult-account eligibility category, and any progress snapshot the account holder chooses to synchronize. Password authentication is handled by Firebase Authentication; StorySprout does not receive the password.

LIVE SPEECH AND WORD LOOKUP

Supporting services

Read-aloud mode sends microphone input to the speech-recognition service supplied by the browser or operating system. That provider’s handling is controlled by its own terms and settings. When a reader requests a definition, the selected word is sent to the Free Dictionary API; no StorySprout account identifier is included in that request.

SEPARATE OPT-IN

Validation and enhanced analysis

Only after a verified adult enables retention, StorySprout sends the retained sample to its authenticated Google Cloud analysis service and uploads the original audio, attempted passage, transcript, alignment, device and audio-quality information, scoring version, and review annotations to private Firebase storage. The analyzer processes its request in memory and does not keep a second audio copy. A visible recording indicator appears while a retained sample is being made. A child’s voice, recording, transcript, and analysis are never used to train or fine-tune an algorithm or AI model.

Why the information is used

  • Authenticate the adult-controlled account and synchronize chosen progress.
  • Operate reading, accessibility, Sprout, training, and battle features.
  • Show parents practice history and non-diagnostic estimates.
  • Evaluate scoring only when recording retention is separately enabled.

Who receives information

Google Firebase provides authentication, database, hosting, and private object storage. Google Cloud Run hosts the authenticated enhanced-analysis service for adult-enabled validation sessions. The browser or operating-system speech provider processes live recognition. StorySprout does not currently sell personal information, display behavioral advertising, or publish reader profiles. Classroom integration is a local preview and does not currently send roster data to Google Classroom.

Retention and deletion

  • Local information remains until browser storage is cleared or the profile is reset.
  • Adult account and synchronized progress remain until the account holder deletes the account.
  • Validation recordings are marked for deletion after 90 days and are removed when the account next connects. The account holder can delete each sample sooner.
  • Disabling future recording does not delete samples already retained.

Adult choices and security

Verified account owners can inspect retained sample metadata, delete individual recordings, stop future retention, or delete the account and associated StorySprout cloud data. Firebase rules restrict cloud records and recordings to the verified account owner. No internet service can promise absolute security.

Children, schools, and professional information

Do not enter a child’s name, email, date of birth, or other direct identifier. Clinician fields are documentation entered by the adult or professional and are not a diagnosis produced by StorySprout. Schools must not use the pilot for education records until appropriate authorization, contracts, role controls, and FERPA review are complete.

Use the telephone number or email above for privacy questions and requests to review or delete StorySprout information. Account holders can also use the in-product recording and account-deletion controls immediately. A verifiable parental-consent workflow and final legal review are not yet established, so the pilot is not ready for public child-directed or school enrollment.
